My life seems to be one long winter's tale at the moment. After a very rainy Saturday when the temperature reached 8 C and the snow was melting rapidly; we awoke to a winter wonderland on Sunday. Now much as I like to see pristine white snow, there is a limit to the number of times that I want to go out and shovel the driveway and I think that we have had more than our fair share of the white stuff this year.
Anyway, a good read is the perfect antidote to bad weather and I had an opportunity to curl up with A Winter's Tale for a couple of hours on Sunday afternoon. The main character is Sophy; who unexpectedly inherits a manor house in the Lancashire countryside; complete with live-in staff and assorted relatives. It is an enjoyable read and one that is filled with little domestic details about the treasures that she discovers in the house and how she sets about its restoration; but it is also about the intricate relationships which unfold between Sophy, her cousin Jack and her head gardener Seth.
As a firm supporter of my local library, I enjoy the sense of anticipation when I request a book and this definitely lived up to my expectations. As time is short at present, I am limiting myself to borrowing one book, rather than coming back with a stack of them as I would have done in the past, but I'm requesting books based on recommendations instead of going in and browsing the shelves. Have you read any good books lately?
