Mothering Sunday

The tradition of Mothering Sunday has its origins in the 19th century when domestic servants were given the day off to visit their mother and family. This day was the fourth Sunday in Lent and was known as Mothering Sunday.

In preparation for the visit, girls baked a Simnel cake to take home to their mothers. Simnel cakes are now more associated with the celebration of Easter.

Today is Mothering Sunday in the U.K. I called my Mum this morning to give her my love and to remember her on this special day. It is four years since I was able to celebrate with her ~ how quickly time passes. I used to wonder what adults were talking about when they said time flies, but it's true!
